What's it all about?

This manuscript is an account (historical fiction) of General Francis Marion’s military campaign in eastern South Carolina during the American Revolution. While authors have previously published historical accounts of these events, this work experiences the campaign firsthand, through the eyes of a young volunteer private. The work weaves historical events into a young man’s experience with human nature, conflict, the natural world, and his own maturing emotions.

Excerpt

In case, Dear Reader, you wonder who I am and what curious circumstances bring us together in such formal literary manner, allow me to humbly introduce myself. The name is William Powell. I prefer to go by “Billy,” though. I live in Kings Tree, South Carolina. I actually live out on a farm some distance from Kings Tree, but I must aim you some where as a point of reference! I am afraid our family’s place is not large nor prominent enough to be included on any map! Huzza! The farm is small, but adequate for our family’s needs, barely. It has been hard work through the years for each of us. Father has assigned every Powell plentiful tasks, tasks that allow the farm to operate. After the Fall of Man, when God told Adam “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread,” [Holy Bible, Genesis 3:19] I believe He was referring to plowing in the South Carolina heat! Huzza! I am sure that throughout the region during this War the fervor for revolution has been somewhat tempered by the practical needs of feeding one’s family. Got to eat, a task eternal.
