What's it all about?

The purpose of this study was to explore the contributing factors that trigger burnout among administrative employees in private practice in the southeast region. This provided a greater understanding of the phenomenon and to foster the ability to give insight to employees and management on the contributing factors. This study examined the phenomenon by exploring the overall, lived experiences and challenges that administrative staff may have with burnout in private practice in the southeast region.
This exploratory study intends to add to the gap of qualitative literature. Approximately 90% of studies on burnout use Maslach Burnout Inventory, which is a quantitative approach (Gustafsson et al., 2008).


Due to the alarming phenomenon occurring nationwide, it has caused several suicides and retaliations among employees in various locations. There have been many situations that employees have committed suicide due to bullying on the job. These situations are occurring due to employees being burned out from their work environment. Both part-time and full-time employees have stated they feel high levels of stress. There were approximately 35 deaths in a well-known company called France Telecom Company due to burnout. Burnout exists in all professions. Researchers have stated that those who care for others are at higher risk to be exposed to burnout. Burnout has become a major issue in the 20th century and this phenomenon needs to be researched further to gain an understanding of the employee’s experience. This exploratory study examined the Lived Experiences of Administrative Staffs with Burnout in Private Practice in the South East Region. Participants were recruited from North Carolina and South Carolina. The theoretical frame work for this study utilized Maslach and Jackson’s Burnout Theory. This study used NVivo to analyze the perceptions and realities of six full-time administrative staffs in the health field and legal field that have been exposed to burnout in a private practice setting. As results seven themes were generated.
